Kaidan always made sense with male Shepard way more than with FemShep. FemShep is all like, "I'm a freakin' bad ass!" and Kaidan is like, "I'm gunna go be emo over here... I need someone to cradle my tortured soul..." He needs a man to hold him in his strong arms.

In this case, obviously, Shepard is the one being held, but uhh... yeah.
