Manga Shakespeare Graphic Story Competition - [link]
Earlier this year in February, the Malaysian branch of British Council organized the aforementioned contest in conjunction with the release of the Manga Shakespeare line in Kinokuniya KL; The competition called for submissions featuring one of four Shakepeare play excerpts given at the website, rendered in 'manga' style (whatever that is...the word just means 'comics' in Japanese...)
However, considering that the grand prize was $1K, I set my hoity-toity comic elitist-ness aside and sent in my rendition of the Three Witches intro from Macbeth. I didn't get the grand prize come result time, but I managed to snag the Runner-up spot, which was great as well because the cash prize paid for April's car installment Plus book vouchers from Kinokuniya is always good. COMICS, HO~!
The Grand prize went to *eisu - [link] Honorable Mention went to ~OniYon - [link] Go Team Comic Elitists XD
Anyway, about my entry...I decided to adapt the Macbeth sequence in modern times, specifically in a high school setting. The Witches take the form of a manipulative clique of popular girls who amuse themselves by toying with the lives of the school's students; Currently, they've set their eyes on Macbeth, one of the power players in the student council. This, like the play, can only end badly...
It would be interesting to take the adaptation further than 4 pages, especially when it comes to making the transition between the original and modern elements believable, whether in character or environment. Lady Macbeth would've been transformed into an ambitious girl who encourages her boyfriend to advance their status in the school society strata regardless the cost...
Dayum. Now I want to see you do Hamlet. Or "Shylock's Justification For Revenge" from The Merchant of Venice. Or Othello. Or A Midsummer Night's Dream. Or ...
If you went and fully fleshed this out, I would be ecstatic to see how you fully develop and modernize the setting. These four pages /alone/ have drawn me in and have me going, "... Wh-what? Only four pages? Can I has moar?" Excellent work!

Or Julius Caesar (but no, I will not foist Romeo & Juliet on you. That's been done to death that even if an all-star ensemble of non-human races including a Klingon, a T-800, a Yautja, a Xenomorph, a Hobbit, a Wookiee, Bela Lugosi's Count Dracula, his Frankenstein, the American werewolf from Paris, a Cylon, a Borg, a Dalek, a Hutt, E.T., Cthulhu, the bugs from Starship Troopers, a Conehead, an Autobot, a Decepticon, a Quintesson, a Tauren, a Draenei, an Undead, a Night Elf, a Goblin, token examples of each of the Covenant races from Halo, an Ewok, a Ferengi, a Namek, a Geonosian, a Zentraedi, a Meltrandi, a Haydonite, a Robotech Master, an Invid, token examples of each of the races from Mass Effect, a Metroid, token examples of each of the races from Star Control II, a Sandworm from Dune, a Skrull, a Thundercat, a Tribble (who plays Romeo!), a Tusken Raider, a Twilek, an Utrom, a Protoss Templar, a Zerg Ultralisk, a Sky Bison, all the crazy made up monsters in a D&D Monster Manual, an Al Behd, a Chocobo, a Moogle, all of the non-human races from The Wheel of Time... etc. Anyway, I'd rather sit through root canal than see another rendition of R&J, even if Peter Jackson, Ron Howard, Woody Allen, Martin Scorsese, Guy Ritchie, Spike Lee, Steven Soderbergh, Francis Ford Coppola, Baz Luhrmann, Oliver Stone, Joel Silver & the Wachowski brothers are in on it).

Bat your eyes girl, be other worldly, seduce a stranger
Love dares you to care for the people on the edge of the night and love dares you to change our way of caring about ourselves
I am the god of Hellfire, and I bring you...
Personally, I like yours far more than the winner's...
I'd love to see more.
